I'm a little confused as to the description of the Dark Ones. Their entry says they are parasites that only live inside reanimated corpses, but then it also says they are a race of "dwarfs", which doesn't make any sense. Regardless, they are known for creating magical artifacts. Perhaps "dwarfs" was in quotes simply because dwarfs are known for forging weapons and such.
In the RPG...
Because Dark Ones inhabit corpses, they would seem like mummies to any Investigators encountering them. Their stats are mostly derived from their host's, with STR, SIZ, and DEX gaining +5 each. CON, on the other hand, gains an extra 3D6, meaning an average of 105. The Dark One's INT averages a mere 35, so they are not too smart, and they have no POW at all. They are said to lack any recognizable form of emotion, fear, or sanity, which I take to mean they are pretty robotic in nature.
Despite all this—and their inability to perform magic—they have the ability to forge magical artifacts which can "open gates without spells, animate lifeless machines, and to modify living beings in forbidding ways". This seems to be their biggest drawcard, as these artifacts can then be used by other beings.
In a video game...
I can't remember my reasoning for leaving Dark Ones out of my original run of this blog, but reading their entry this time around, I have come to really like them. Not necessarily as combatants, because they are not much different to zombies, but as a kind of "resource". They could perhaps be allies who provide the player with the artifacts to progress the game.
In a film...
Zombies and mummies have been done to death, and the Dark Ones' ability to make magical artifacts wouldn't really be enough to make them unique.
